Single Hand Blackjack - Game Guide

The goal in the classic game of Single Hand Blackjack is to get to 21. Face cards (Jack, Queen and King), count for 10 while the Ace can count for 11 or 1. Number cards, the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and all the way up to 10, count for exactly what they are. A 2 is a 2 and a 3 is a 3. If your number exceeds the dealer’s without going over 21, you win!

Single Hand Blackjack - How to Play

The goal of Blackjack is to get as close to or at the number 21 by using face cards and numbered cards. You win your wager if you are closer to 21 than the dealer. Any hand over 21 results in a bust.

You make at least the minimum bet before any cards are dealt. The dealer’s first card is always dealt down while your first two cards are dealt up. Once you’ve received your two cards, you can Stand, Hit, Double Down or Split with applicable cards. If you hit, you get another card, and you keep hitting until you think you’ve gotten as close to the number 21 as you possibly can without going over.

If you go over 21, you’ve busted and the dealer wins. If you’re closer to 21 than the dealer, you win. If you’re at exactly 21, you’ve hit a blackjack! If you get 21 off the draw, a natural 21 via your first two cards, not only do you win your bet, but you win a 6/5 bonus on top of your bet in Single Hand Blackjack!

Single Hand Blackjack - Bet Types

There is only one bet in Single Hand Blackjack. You can make the minimum bet all the way up to the maximum bet before any cards are dealt unless you double down. You can double any two cards in Single Hand Blackjack. A double down is doubling your wager for one more card.

Single Hand Blackjack – Payouts

You win what you bet. If you bet $100, you win $100. If you win with a blackjack, you show exactly 21, you win 6/5. In that case, your $100 wager will pay back $120 in profit.

Single Hand Blackjack - Strategy/Tips

The dealer is going to have one card face down. What this means is that you will have to strategize around the upcard. If the dealer is showing a card higher than one of yours, you’ll want to hit. If the dealer shows a card lower than yours, you should consider staying and hope for a bust. See a couple of examples below:

Dealer’s upcard is a 5 and you have a Jack (10) and 8 - - Stay

Dealer’s upcard is a 9 and you have a Queen (10) and 4 - - Hit

In Single Hand Blackjack, the dealer has to stay at 17. You can double down on any two cards. Just remember, if you double, you have to stay after the third card is dealt. You should only double on a 10 or 11 unless you think the dealer has a very weak hand.

There’s something else you can do in Single Hand Blackjack and that’s buy insurance on the dealer having a 21. If the dealer’s upcard is an Ace, you can buy insurance that the downcard isn’t a 10 or a face card. Insurance pays 2:1 but if the dealer does have blackjack, you lose your original bet. The net effect is that you’re even on the hand.

You probably shouldn’t buy insurance against a blackjack too often. In the long run, you’re going to end up losing both your insurance bet and your original bet.
